When the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search

Brauns, Chris. When the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search: Biblical Principles & Practices to Guide Your Search. Chicago: Moody, 2011.

Many churches today are looking for a pastor. And, for many of these churches, this process is too familiar. I just finished a new book by Chris Brauns that will prove invaluable to any church who  takes his advice. The subtitle is “Biblical Principles & Practices to Guide Your Search.” Throughout the book Brauns remains true to this aim as he continually bases his content on the Scriptures. Although the book covers most aspects that a pastoral search committee and church may encounter in an interview process for a new pastor, Brauns clearly emphasizes the Word of God as the central tool for selecting and calling a pastor. Great stress is placed on biblical qualifications as found in 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus. But, the greatest emphasis (4 chapters) is given to calling a pastor who is able to preach and teach the Word. The most practical part of the book in this aspect is that he not only tells you what to look for, he also gives clear tools of application to help a search committee along the way. In my opinion, any church (search committee) who is calling a new pastor must read this book, (at least one like it) and put into practice these biblical principles.
